ALFA ROMEO TONALE PHEV
COMPACT SUV

WATT MATTERS?
The Tonale's best argument is that a plug-in SUV can still have some personality. The updated Q4 pairs all-wheel drive with Alfa styling and a driver-focused chassis. CarExpert's overseas drive praised its sharp steering and smoother petrol-electric handover, but also found a firm ride. That matters more than another photograph of the grille.
THE BASICS
The Australian Series 3 Veloce Ibrida Plug-In Q4 combines a turbo petrol engine with electric drive for 198kW. Alfa's local page lists a 15.5kWh battery and up to 54km WLTP electric range. Regular charging is essential to make the plug-in hardware worthwhile; a petrol backup does not make charging optional if low fuel use is the goal.

THE WATTCAR TAKE
There is a credible driver's SUV here, but the $78,990 list price before on-road costs leaves little room for excuses. Its electric range is modest, and a comfort-first buyer should test the ride carefully. We rate it 6.5/10 as a research assessment: steering, design and powertrain refinement earn credit; price, electric reach and the smaller dealer network hold it back. Worth a drive if you want character, rather than the strongest numbers.
